Music is an extremely important element of film. It can be used to illuminate or change the mood and tone of an opening. We associate different genre's of music with different genre's of film. Romantic Comedies are usually laced with Contemporary Pop songs about love, whereas sombre strings are usually associated with horror movies.
In some instances music can even become solely associated with a film, such as the theme song from Star Wars by John Williams, every time it is played people will instantly think Star Wars.
For example in the film Memento directed by Christopher Nolan, the opening music is string based and bleak, giving off the connotations that the film is going contain depressing elements and it fits well amounts the scene. My film is extremely similar in terms of the mood of which my music is going to create. As my film includes the death of a minor, i want to create a haunting ambience.
The track I am going to use is "Tearing Up Asphalt" by Arrange.
The music starts with melancholy, trickling keys which will give the film an almost gloomy aura. These keys persist for around 30 seconds with the overall tune fluttering between different harmonies. The vocals then come in which are distorted which again give a nightmarish effect.
In my film I am going to use music to stir up emotion and sympathy for the character, which intern will make the killer more detestable from the audience's perspective. I want the audience to be emotionally committed/affected within the first few minutes.
